Goodbye Solo
February 15, 2010
The film begins in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, with Solo (Souléymane Sy Savané), a Senegalese cab driver, who is working to provide a better life for his young family. William (Red West), an old man with a lifetime of regrets, hires Solo to take him to Blowing Rock, a peak in which updrafts cause objects that are dropped from it to fly upwards. William does not ask for a ride back from the rock and is obviously depressed, so Solo assumes that the old man intends to commit suicide there. Solo befriends William, in hopes of talking him out of ending his life. He introduces William to his girlfriend and her daughter, hoping to inspire the old man with the joys of life. It is not revealed whether William commits suicide or not. [D-Man2010 www.imdb.com]

American Violet

Directed by Tim Disney

Written by Bill Haney

Based on true events during the 2000 election, AMERICAN VIOLET tells the astonishing story of Dee Roberts (critically hailed newcomer Nicole Beharie), a 24 year-old African American single mother of four young girls living in a small Texas town who is barely able to make ends meet.  While police drag Dee from work in handcuffs, dumping her in the squalor of the women’s county prison, the powerful local district attorney (Academy Award® nominee Michael O’Keefe) leads an extensive drug bust, sweeping her housing project with military precision.   Dee soon discovers she has been charged as a drug dealer.  Even though Dee has no prior drug record and no drugs were found on her in the raid, she is offered a hellish choice: plead guilty and go home as a convicted felon or remain in prison, jeopardizing her custody and risking a long prison sentence.  She chooses to fight the district attorney and the unyielding criminal justice system, risking everything in a battle that forever changes her life and the Texas justice system. AMERICAN VIOLET also stars Academy Award® nominee Alfre Woodard, Emmy Award® winner Charles S. Dutton, Tim Blake Nelson, Will Patton and Xzibit.

NOTE: AMERICAN VIOLET was initially inspired by an NPR story by Wade Goodwyn.

THE STONING OF SORAYA M.

Directed by Cyrus Nowrasteh

Written by Cyrus Nowrasteh and Betsy Giffen Nawrasteh

In a world of secrecy, corruption and injustice, a single courageous voice can tell a true story that changes everything.

This is what lies at the heart of the emotionally charged experience of THE STONING OF SORAYA M.  Based on an incredible true story, this powerful tale of a village’s persecution of an innocent woman becomes both a daring act of witness and a compelling parable about mob rule.  Who will join forces with the plot against her, who will surrender to the mob, and who will dare to stand up for what’s right.  It is both a classic fable of good and evil and an inspiring tribute to the many fighting against injustice around the world.  THE STONING OF SORAYA M. was a rousing runner-up to SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE as the Audience Favorite at the Toronto Film Festival.  Academy Award nominee Shohreh Aghdashloo (HOUSE OF SAND AND FOG) stars in the heroic role of Zahra, an Iranian woman with a burning secret.  When a journalist (Jim Caviezel, THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST, DÉJÀ VU) is stranded in her remote village, she takes a bold chance to reveal what the villages will stop at nothing to keep hidden.  Thus begins the remarkable account of what happened to Soraya (Mozhan Marn), a kind, spirited woman whose bad marriage leads her cruel, divorce-seeking husband to conspire against her, trumping up charges of infidelity, which carry an unimaginable penalty.  Moving through a minefield of scheming, lies and deceit, Soraya and Zahra will risk everything to use the sole weapon she has left – the fearless, passionate voice that can share Soraya’s story with a shocked world.
