About This Person/Group
THE CIVIL WARS NOMINATED FOR TWO GRAMMY AWARDS
DEBUT ALBUM BARTON HOLLOW SURPASSES 200,000 COPIES SOLD
“…through bands such as The Civil Wars, a new music industry is born.” —Los Angeles Times
The Civil Wars are nominated for “Best Folk Album” and “Best Country Duo/Group Performance” at the 54th annual GRAMMY Awards. This honor culminates a breakout year for the duo, whose debut album, Barton Hollow, has sold over 215,000 units to date and continues to receive widespread critical acclaim (Sensibility Music). In celebration of the album, the band is currently in the midst of a sold-out U.S. headlining tour, including a performance at Nashville’s historic Ryman Auditorium on January 12. Please see below for complete details.
Released February 1, 2011, Barton Hollow debuted at #12 on the Billboard 200 and #1 on iTunes’ overall Albums chart. The album’s first single and title track was nominated for “Duo Video of the Year” at the 2011 CMT Music Awards, while the band was nominated for “Vocal Duo of the Year” at the 2011 CMA Awards and both “New/Emerging Artist of the Year” as well as “Duo/Group of the Year” at the 10th annual Americana Honors and Music Awards. Additionally, the band was selected as a VH1 “You Oughta Know” artist to watch and both the music videos for “Poison & Wine” and “Barton Hollow” have been featured on VH1’s “Top 20 Countdown.” Moreover, the duo has performed twice on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” as well as on the “Late Show with David Letterman,” American Public Media’s “A Prairie Home Companion” and KCRW’s “Morning Becomes Eclectic.”
Barton Hollow was recorded in Nashville and was produced by Grammy-award winning Charlie Peacock. The 12-track album comes after the duo’s remarkably successful live album, which has been downloaded over 300,000 times. Additionally, their 2009 four song EP, Poison & Wine, debuted at #4 on the iTunes Singer/Songwriter Top Albums chart. The EP’s title track and first single was played in full on “Grey’s Anatomy,” and its accompanying music video has been viewed over 2,400,000 times on YouTube. Of the song, Stereo Subversion declares, “…your ears are immediately gripped by a haunting sound both simple and pristine…breathtaking.” The music video for the first single and title track from the new record was released in November and has been viewed over 1,400,000 times.
The Civil Wars consists of John Paul White, hailing from Florence, AL and Joy Williams, originally from Santa Cruz, CA, but now residing in East Nashville. The duo’s chance meeting a year and a half ago fueled an immediate songwriting chemistry and creative synergy. Their second show ever, performed at a sold out Eddie’s Attic, was recorded and released as a free digital album.
About The Civil Wars:
A folk-pop duo made up of guitarist John Paul White and vocalist Joy Williams, the Civil Wars made a quick name for themselves with the release of a digital album, Live at Eddie's Attic, in 2009. The Poison & Wine EP followed later that year, and the duo partnered up with producer Charlie Peacock to begin recording a full-length album in 2010. The result, Barton Hollow, was released in February 2011, topping the iTunes charts and cracking Billboard's Top 20 during its first week. - All Music Guide
